Pilots were forced to abort a take-off when the airliner experienced a rare and serious type of engine failure. It’s called an “uncontained engine failure” and it happens when engine parts break off and are spewed outside the engine, a federal official said.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorised to speak publicly about the incident.

Flames and heavy black smoke poured from the side of Miami-bound American Airlines Flight 383 as it sat on the runway after the aborted take-off. Officials say the incident left 21 people injured.

Everyone evacuated after the plane blew a tyre and damaged an engine.

Evacuation chutes extended from the plane.

Television reports showed a large plume of black smoke coming from the Boeing 767, which appeared to be damaged at the rear.

The Chicago Fire Department tweeted it responded to the scene.

The fire department also said there was an extra-alarm emergency response at the airport for an “aircraft down.”

She said buses were sent to take 161 passengers and nine crew members from the runway to the terminal.

The FAA is investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport, a FedEx cargo plane also caught fire after its landing gear collapsed shortly after landing, according to NBC Miami.

Fort Lauderdale airport spokesman Kerry Sanders said FedEx 910 was rolling on the runway when one of the plane’s landing gears collapsed and it’s left wing caught fire.

FedEx officials said their pilots are safe after the incident.

The plane had just arrived from Memphis.

Video footage from witnesses posted on social media showed an explosion followed by smoke billowing from the plane, which appeared to be tilted on its side.
